CARAWAY

lyrics & music by Grant King

BONUS TRACK!

Remastered from a poor-quality cassette recording of Michael Callen performing my song “Caraway” at the now-defunct S.N.A.F.U. on Sixth Avenue & 21st Street in NYC in autumn 1982, with me accompanying him on acoustic guitar and as a backup vocal.

Michael Callen and I met for the first time when he advertised in the Village Voice to meet and work with other gay singer-songwriters. He was the first artist to cover one of my songs (this one!). I will always be grateful to him for that, as well as for his gorgeous singing, expert songwriting, friendship, support, and tireless activism.

I urge you to listen to Michael’s superlative double CD, Legacy, and to read Matthew J. Jones’ bio of Michael, “Love Don’t Need A Reason.”

Special thanks to author Matthew J. Jones for making me aware this cassette existed, to the LGBT Community Center National History Archive, and to Richard Dworkin.

Piano and lead vocal: Michael Callen | Guitar and backing vocal: Grant King | Produced by Dan Martin | Mastered by Jon Gordon

CARAWAY
words & music © Grant King

Fourteen years ago I ran
Aground on this land
With a worn brown valise
In a brown calloused hand
And all my belongings
Were light-years away
On the planet you call Caraway

I come from wheat and work
Yellow sky, blesséd dirt
I left my friends and children
For a two-week jaunt on Earth
With nary an inkling
Of how long I’d stay
Adrift and immune to Caraway

Caraway calls me tonight
Look out your window
Look at the glow of that star
In the evening light
Caraway beckons tonight
Through the frosted glass
That star of durability holds me fast

My family’s probably gone now
It’s live for the moment back home
Love who you like, leave when you want,
Take all your money and roam
I’m sad yet relieved
That there’s nothing to say
To the ghosts back on Caraway

Caraway calls me tonight
Look out your window
Look at the glow of that star
In the evening light
Caraway beckons tonight
Through the frosted glass
That star of durability holds me fast

Fourteen years ago I ran
Aground on this land
With a worn brown valise
In a brown calloused hand
And though I was not always here
It’s here I am today
Reconciling Earth with Caraway
Reconciling my Earth with my Caraway
